A description of God's covenant with Abram
1 And it came to pass after these things, that the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: for I am a shield unto thee, and a great reward unto thee.
2 And Abram said, What shall I give thee, O Lord GOD? For I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus.
3 And Abram said, Behold, thou hast not given me any seed;
4 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thy heir; but he that is of thee shall be thy heir.
5 The Lord God took him out and said, Look at the sky and count the stars. Can you count them? And he said unto her, Thus shall thy seed be.
6 He trusted in the Lord, and the Lord made it right for him.
7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of the city of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give thee this land for an inheritance.
8 And he said, O Lord GOD, how shall I know that I shall inherit it?
9 And the LORD said unto him, Take me here a three-year-old calf, and a three-year-old goat, and a three-year-old lamb, and a dove, and a young dove.
10 And he brought all these things unto the LORD, and cut them in two, and put the one in front of the other, but he did not break the birds.
11 When the birds of prey landed on the carcasses, Abram removed them.
12 And it came to pass, as the sun was setting, that Abram fell into a deep sleep; and, behold, there was a great darkness upon him.
13 And he said unto Abram, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Thy seed shall be a stranger in a strange land: and they shall serve them four hundred years.
14 But I will punish the nation that they will enslave, and after that they will come out with great riches.
15 But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace.
16 Thou shalt be buried in good old age, and in the fourth generation they shall return, for the wickedness of the Amorites is not yet fulfilled.
17 And it came to pass, when the sun was set, and it was dark, behold, a smoke furnace and a burning torch passed among them.
18 In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram: I have given this land to your seed, from the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates.

9 The fear of the LORD is pure: he endureth for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true, they are all righteousness.
