Warning from the history of Israel
1 I don't want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were under a cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
2 And all were baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 They all ate the same spiritual food.
4 And they all drank the same spiritual water, because they drank of the Spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
5 But God was not pleased with most of them, so they died in the wilderness.
6 And these things became our admonition, that we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
7 And you must not be idolaters, as many of them became. As it is written, "Those who sat down to eat and drink and got up to laugh."
8 And let us not commit adultery as they did, and in one day thirty-three thousand died.
9 And let us not tempt the Lord, as they tempted us, and are destroyed of serpents.
10 And do not murmur, as some of them murmured, and were destroyed by the angel of death.
11 These things happened unto them for an admonition, and to write unto us, that we might live unto the end of the world.
12 For whosoever shall think to be strong, let him not fall.
13 You have not been tempted in any way by man, but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear.
Idol offerings and Lord's Supper
14 Therefore, my beloved, abstain from idolatry.
15 I speak to you wisely. Investigate what I say.
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, isn't it a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn't it a communion in the body of Christ?
17 For the bread is one, and we are all one body: for we are all partakers of one bread.
18 Pay attention to those who are Israelites by sexual relations. Don't those who eat the sacrifices have fellowship at the altar?
19 So what do I say? Is Idol Sacrifice Anything? Or is the idol something?
20 For I say, that the things which are offered by the Gentiles, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God; and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
21 You cannot drink both the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
22 Or do we provoke the Lord to anger? Are we stronger than that?
All things to the glory of God
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient. All products are appropriate but not all are beneficial.
24 Strive for the good of others, not of yourselves.
25 Eat what is sold in the butcher's shop, and don't ask questions out of discretion.
26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
27 If any of the unbelievers invite you into your home, and your heart goes out to you, eat whatever is set before you, and do not ask questions out of conscience.
28 But if any man say unto you, This hath been offered in sacrifice, eat not, for the sake of him that calleth, and for the sake of conscience.
29 What I say is not yours, but another's, because my freedom is tested by another's conscience.
30 If I eat with thanksgiving, why am I slandered because of him for whom I give thanks?
31 Therefore whether ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
32 Neither be ye Jews, nor Greeks, nor the church of God.
33 As I delight in all things, working for the good of many, not of myself, but of many, that they may be saved.
