Acts of the Apostles
Introduction
1 Theophilus, I wrote the first book about all the things that Jesus did and taught.
2 By that day the apostles whom he had chosen were raised up by the Holy Spirit.
3 And after he had suffered, he manifested himself alive to them with many testimonies, and for forty days he appeared to them and spoke of the kingdom of God.
4 And he gathered his disciples together, and commanded them not to go out of Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me.
5 For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
Jesus' Resurrection to heaven
6 And when they were come together, they asked him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore the kingdom of Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times and the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But when the Holy Ghost comes on you, you will have power, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Judea, and in Samaria, and to the most distant part of the earth.
9 And when he had said these things, while they beheld, he was lifted up, and the cloud hid him out of their sight.
10 And as they went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 And they said, O men of Galilee, why look ye up to heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come again, just as you saw him go up to heaven.
Matthias to be chosen in place of Judah
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is on a Sabbath day near Jerusalem.
13 And when they were come, they went up into the upper chamber, where Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, and Philip, and Thomas, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
14 And they were all with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
15 And it came to pass in those days, that Peter stood and talked with the brethren, about an hundred and twenty.
16 Brethren, the scripture must have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost spake by David concerning Judas, which was the leader of those who betrayed Jesus.
17 For he was numbered with us, and he was partakers of the ministry
18 This man bought a field with the earnings of unrighteousness, and fell on his face, and his belly was rent, and all his bowels came out.
19 And this was known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, until the name of the field was called in their language Achladmah, which is, the field of blood.
20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his house be desolate, and let no man dwell therein, and let no man take his place.
21 But of those who were with us at all times, when the Lord Jesus came and went among us,
22 From the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us, it would be good for one of them to be a witness for us in his resurrection.
23 And they set up two men, Joseph of Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.
24 And he prayed, and said, Lord, who knoweth the hearts of all men, shew me which of them thou hast chosen.
25 To take the place of this ministry and apostleship, which Judas left in lawlessness, to go to his own place.
26 And they laid slip for them, and the name of Matthias came out. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
